However, with Peterborough City Council’s low-cost locally-owned energy tariff – Peterborough Energy – you can afford to give that extra gift this Christmas. Launched in 2015 in partnership with OVO Energy, Peterborough Energy has so far saved over 5,500 residents on average £233 per year on their energy bills.

As well as significantly reducing your bills, you can also receive a £20 Amazon.co.uk Gift Card for every friend you refer to the scheme. Media officer Mark Pearson, who took advantage of the scheme’s generosity, said: “I referred a colleague after having switched myself and seen the benefits of low cost energy. The process is simple and the website is great to use. I bought some new headphones and now I’m always keeping an eye out for more people to refer!”  

In addition, Peterborough Energy offers a 3% interest reward on all accounts that are in credit and award-winning customer service from uSwitch Supplier of the Year 2014 and 2015 OVO Energy.

The scheme has already scooped up the Best Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency Award at the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Awards – and was nominated for the Best Resident Engagement on Energy Savings at the SHIFT Awards in November.

Councillor Gavin Elsey, who leads on the council’s energy strategy, said: “This is fantastic recognition for a scheme that has helped 5,500 Peterborough households switch to a cheaper tariff. It shows that many people are simply paying far too much for their gas and electricity and we are particularly proud of the citywide £1.4 million savings that have so far been made.”
