The far reaching legal implications of new rules governing temporary workers were in the spotlight at an employment law briefing.
From pension rights to the giving of Christmas gifts, a host of scenarios were discussed by some of Peterborough’s highest profile HR professionals under the guidance of employment law expert Martin Bloom.
The Agency Workers Regulations are set to come into force on October 1. A 49 page Guidelines document has been produced by the Government but there are still question marks over some areas. The Regulations are aimed at bringing the terms of basic working and employment conditions for temporary agency workers in line with comparable permanent members of staff. The seminar, hosted by Anne Corder Recruitment and Hegarty LLP Solicitors, was aimed at helping HR professionals clarify some of the issues surrounding the new regulations.
Hegarty employment partner Martin Bloom took delegates through the Regulations and helped interpret them using a number of scenarios – including delegates own dilemmas.
“As ever it is the real life interpretation of Regulations which is causing confusion,” said Anne Corder. “We are working with clients to ensure compliance and there are issues surrounding things like the provision of gym membership or the giving of Christmas gifts to temporary workers.
“Martin’s knowledge and expertise was invaluable in helping delegates to understand the Regulations and overlay them onto their particular business.”
The seminar at The National Deaf Blind Centre in Hampton was the latest in ACR’s efforts to prepare businesses in Peterborough for the introduction of the Regulations. The agency, based in Park Road and Lynch Wood, both in Peterborough, is also offering free on-site Impact Assessments to help companies pinpoint any necessary changes prior to the enforcement of the Regulations.
For anyone who was unable to attend, the seminar notes are available to download at http://www.hegarty.co.uk/seminars_past.htm. And if you have a specific query relating to the legislation please call Martin on 01733 295632.
