Free help for residents in Werrington and Gunthorpe to make the most of cycling, walking and public transport

Residents in Werrington and Gunthorpe are being given the opportunity to take part in a new project which will help them benefit from travelling more sustainably.

The support is being offered by Travelchoice, as part of Peterborough City Council’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund programme.

Working in Partnership with Sustrans and Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), Travelchoice is helping people to think about walking and cycling more and to understand their public transport options.

Over the next few months Sustrans will be working in Werrington (east of Foxcovert Road) and Gunthorpe (north of Gunthorpe Road) to help residents make informed choices about the way they travel.

A number of events are being held by Sustrans in July and August including guided walks and bike rides for groups of people in the Werrington and Gunthorpe area and Dr Bike (MOT) sessions, with free basic bike maintenance and repairs.

In September Sustrans will be visiting residents to offer 1-2-1 support and advice. If you live in the project area, one of the team may knock on your door to get feedback on how you travel. They will be offering a range of maps and information about active and sustainable travel that will be delivered free of charge by bicycle courier to your house.

There will also be the opportunity to boost your cycling confidence with a free training session with a qualified instructor.

Eric Schneider from Sustrans believes this is a great opportunity for people to make use of the free advice, “Werrington and Gunthorpe traditionally has high levels of car use. But the area has a fantastic network of footpaths, cycleways and quiet roads. We think many trips, especially shorter, local ones can be replaced by walking, cycling or public transport. We want to help people enjoy the outdoors, learn about the cycle and footpaths in the area, take part in cycling training, and get a free bike MOT. This is something the whole family can get involved in.”

Rizwan Hemraj from Travelchoice said, “We are delighted to be working with Sustrans on this innovative new personalised travel plan project. We hope the quality and variety of information will help people in Werrington and Gunthorpe make more informed travel choices around the city, improving their health saving money”.
