About Michael Barnes:

Michael has extensive experience of EU institutions, policies and programmes, including in Regional Policy, Agriculture and Fisheries and EU Enlargement. He worked for the UK government for more than 25 years and is currently Head of EU Programmes at the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership.

Michael and his team support local investment of the 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment (ESI) Funds. The team assists businesses, universities and other partners to develop ERDF and ESF project ideas; helps to promote EU funded rural development programmes; and is involved in various European Transnational Co-operation programmes.

As Head of European Programmes at the Government Office for the East of England (GO-East), Michael managed the closure of the 2000-06 East of England Structural Fund programmes. He was a member of the Programme Monitoring Committees for the 2007-2013 East of England ERDF Competitiveness Programme and England and Gibraltar ESF Programme.

Between 2001 and 2003, Michael led an EU twinning project in Riga to assist with Latvia’s EU accession preparations.
