Congratulations to Peterborough’s building sector for its two wins and six commendations at this year’s regional Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards.

The high-profile East Anglia event on Friday 30 June saw entries from all over the region and wins scooped for Peterborough-based companies in the Best Domestic Extension and Special Award for Consistent Quality Design categories.

Winner in the Best Domestic Extension category was Scott Whyte Architect from Glinton who designed a scheme at 17 Normansgate, Ailsworth. Harris McCormack Architects (pictured) from Wansford also picked up the special award for consistent quality design.

A number of Peterborough schemes also made the final shortlist including Carillion with Frank Shaw Associates for St Michael’s Church of England School at Cardea in the Best Education Building category and the city council and Harris McCormack Architects were finalists in the Best Partnership category.

Other finalists included Harris McCormack Architects again for Best Individual New Home, Best Public Service Building and Best Commercial New Building, and Cross Keys Homes with Larkfleet Homes were finalists in the category of Best Social or Affordable New Housing. 

The LABC regional building event is the largest business-to-business awards scheme, describing its remit as “rewarding excellent buildings, outstanding companies, and partnerships and individuals that go that extra mile”. The Oscars of the building control sector, the awards include categories that recognise quality in all types of building projects.

Commenting on Peterborough’s success city council leader councillor John Holdich said: “These accolades showcase the high standard of building projects in our city of which we are justly proud. 

“The winning and shortlisted companies have had to prove high levels of compliance with building regulations, excellent craftsmanship, sustainability and high levels of skill to cope with challenging site conditions which are all priorities for the council. 

“We’re fortunate to have such a quality range of contractors in our area.”

Regional winners in each category are automatically shortlisted for the LABC Grand Finals which will be held in London in November.
