Cutting edge clean technologies will be the focus of a free webinar being run on 2 June by Opportunity Peterborough ahead of new right to repair legislation coming into force this s.

The virtual event will give local employers expert guidance and real-world examples of how clean technologies can be combined with the concept of circular economy to improve productivity, profitability, and efficiency across the business.

Among the speakers will be:

• Global think-tank, Cleantech Group who will discuss what lessons SMEs can take from the electronics right-to-repair legislation and supply chain logistics innovators
• Fernhay Partners who are developing zero carbon last-mile delivery in cities
• Anglia Ruskin University – who will discuss the impact of 0, a project funded by the European Union through the North Sea Region Programme which is helping SME manufacturers adopt new technologies.

The circular economy aims to move society away from the ‘take-make-dispose’ model – where raw materials are collected, transformed into products, and discarded as waste – into one where resources are used for as long as possible, and productive uses are found for waste streams.

This event is being run by the Circular Peterborough team at Opportunity Peterborough which runs the city’s circular economy programme in partnership with Peterborough City Council. The team works with businesses of all sizes and is keen for local employers to use sustainable principles and clean technologies to recover after covid-19 and improve performance and resilience.

There will also be time for delegates to discuss the barriers and opportunities for their businesses with using circular economy principles and adopting clean technology. The Circular Peterborough team will use the feedback to adapt city level strategies and to tailor long term one-to-one business support for delegates.

Tom Hennessy, chief executive of Opportunity Peterborough said, “Legislation like the right to repair is driving innovation and improvements in sustainable business practices. With the circular economy, we can give businesses practical steps to not only protect the planet, but also to improve productivity and performance.

“Many businesses will already have some circular processes in place, like recovering components from older products for remanufacturing, finding new uses for waste streams – like turning waste coffee grounds into bio-fuel – and even recycling office materials to divert them from landfill. We want to build on those achievements and to ramp up the city’s journey towards establishing a fully circular economy by 2050.”
