Business Continuity Awareness Week – Gone but not forgotten

March 21st to the 25th saw the annual Business Continuity Awareness Week (BCAW). Organised by the Business Continuity Institute (BCI), the global event is aimed at educating business professionals about the importance of Business Continuity. It is also an ideal opportunity for local organisations to highlight the concept of risk analysis and continuity management.

During the week there were many events worldwide where business leaders took advantage of conferences and seminars with experts in the field. The BCI also ran webcasts of the events throughout the week making them a readily accessible resource for all businesses including Cambridgeshire Chamber members. Many more local activities took place with local authority involvement and press coverage over the week also helped to increase awareness.

The main focus points for BCAW this year were:

  • Protecting business value and reputation in a crisis situation.
  • Ensuring continuation of operations during times of disruption (resilience).
  • Demonstrating and providing materials to show corporate governance and risk protection to customers.

The key message of BCAW was that effective business continuity management is essential for organisations to survive any unforeseen disruption.

‘’Planning is an unnatural process. It is much more fun to do something else. The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise rather than preceded by a period of worry and depression. Failure to plan is planning to fail.’’ Sir John Harvey-Smith
