Skills development

University Centre Peterborough
Working together, Opportunity Peterborough, Peterborough City Council and Higher Education Institutions in partnership with businesses, aim to support the development of long-term higher education in Peterborough. The University Centre Peterborough, which opened in November 2009, is proving hugely popular and we’re hoping to expand this to full university status by 2016.

Apprenticeships
Working in partnership, Opportunity Peterborough and Peterborough City Council will support a programme of apprenticeships that will provide on-the-job and vocational training. This will empower people of all ages to learn practical, new skills and enable businesses to grow.

Diplomas
Covering a range of courses, training will be provided by the city’s leading FE deliverers and secondary schools, leading to diploma qualifications for 14 to 19 year olds. These will set them on their way to gain full employment or as the first steps towards more advanced training.

Further Education prospectus development
Working with local providers of further education, Opportunity Peterborough will develop prospectuses that are geared towards the need of local businesses and Peterborough’s existing and potential workforce.

Intelligence
Opportunity Peterborough will be working with Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, Peterborough City Council, the Growth Partnership and sector forums to collate, maintain and review data on business growth skill requirements.  It’s essential that businesses tell us what they need so we can gear our training appropriately.

Sector skills
This partnership will aim to identify and develop skills programmes around key sectors in Peterborough. Led by Opportunity Peterborough, skills providers and businesses, we will focus on engagement and developing skills in those sectors which have been identified as key to the city’s economic growth.
