Meet…Sue Ryder

What is Sue Ryder and who are your customers?

Sue Ryder is an international charity providing 4 million hours of health and social care to thousands of people with specialist respite and end of care needs in 12 countries and in 13 care centres in the UK. Thorpe Hall Hospice is the Sue Ryder centre in Peterborough, whose work is based on the principles of compassionate care for the relief of those suffering from cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Huntingdon’s Disease and many other illnesses. The hospice supports around 350 patients a year, providing medical, spiritual, social and emotional support to patients and their families with the aim of bringing pain relief, dignity and informed choice to all.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in today’s economy?

Our biggest challenge is people’s capacity to give, due to the abundance of worthwhile causes of equal need. A recent poll also showed animal and conservation charities were better known than Sue Ryder, as we have limited resource to raise our profile. There is also a misconception that a hospice must be a very difficult place, yet while there are sad times, we follow Lady Ryder’s vision of creating a joyful environment for patients and visitors.

What’s your greatest achievement/claim to fame?

Protecting the legacy of Lady Ryder by improving standards in long-term and end of life care to relieve suffering, which has received recognition from the government, establishing Sue Ryder as a ‘partner of choice.’

What makes being in Peterborough so good?

Peterborough has been very generous and sustained Thorpe Hall over the last 20 years. We’re fortunate to be part of such a vibrant hub of local business and we thank them for  supporting our work.

Our annual fundraiser, Big Wigs, which challenges businesses to turn £50 into a £5,000, has proved very popular in the city. It’s a great corporate team building event and this year we’re delighted to welcome adviser to Lord Sugar, Nick Hewer, to our forthcoming campaign.
