The Royal Mail’s new business barometer survey shows that Peterborough has the fastest-growing population of businesses in the UK, with a 3.78 per cent increase between April and September 2006.

Figures for VAT registrations are running at 50 per cent above de-registrations, demonstrating a level of business growth higher than regional and national averages.

Peterborough has more people of working age as a percentage of the population than either the East of England or the UK as a whole.

There is a daily inflow of people coming to work in the city – reflected in the fact that the city’s ‘job density’ (the ratio of jobs to working age population) is 1.03.

36 per cent of Peterborough’s workforce is in managerial, professional or technical jobs.

Wage rates are lower than regional and national averages, reflecting the city’s lower cost of living – particularly for housing.
