Peterborough and the surrounding area offers homes for a fraction of the price of similar properties in London, despite being only 50 minutes away.

According to the BBC the average price for a semi-detached residential property in London is now over £387,000. The average semi-detached property in Cambridge – just down the road from Peterborough – costs around £280,000 while in neighbouring Huntingdonshire the average price is about £178,000.

In Peterborough you would expect to pay, on average, just £154,000 for the same semi-detached home.

According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, house price to income ratios in Peterborough are the lowest in the East of England and the South East – making this the most affordable place to live throughout these two regions.

Centrally located between the East Anglian fens and the edge of the Midlands, the city also provides an outstanding quality of life. It is a historic cathedral city with a number of attractions, leisure facilities and places of cultural interest.

A number of new residential developments are being built in and around Peterborough, providing thousands of new homes. House building in Peterborough hit an 18-year high in 2006/7 with 1,265 properties being constructed – 47 per cent higher than the 2005/06 total of 862. It was the highest number since 1989.

The Hampton township on the southern edge of Peterborough will eventually provide 7,300 homes for 18,000 people. Two neighbourhoods, Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale, are already established with around 2,000 homes.

Meanwhile, around 1,500 new homes are set to be built at Stanground and 1,200 at Paston. Nine hundred homes are being built on land formerly occupied by British Sugar's manufacturing plant in Woodston while other major developments are being built at the East of England Showground and off Oundle Road.

Work has recently begun on building 550 homes at Potter’s Way in Fengate. In the first stage of the scheme, developer Bellwinch Homes is putting up 261 apartments.

Looking to the future, national regeneration agency English Partnerships recently announced that a site in Peterborough is to become the country’s second zero carbon community in its Carbon Challenge. Around 450 environmentally sustainable homes are to be built at South Bank Phase 1 (Glebe Road) in the city centre.

Outside the city a large number of small towns and villages give an unlimited choice of rural homes – from stone-built cottages to large manors set in their own grounds – all within easy travelling distance of Peterborough.

Several Peterborough-based housing associations offer not just homes for rent but also ‘shared equity’ schemes in which people can purchase part of a home and rent the rest from the housing association. Details are available from:
