Peterborough is
easy to reach,
both by road
and by rail,
and once you’re
here it is easy
to get around.
Location and transport
Traffic in Peterborough flows freely, even in the city centre, and there is a first
class bus service connecting every part of the city and the surrounding villages.
You can be in central London in just 50 minutes using the high speed East Coast
main rail line – so you can be at a meeting in the capital in little more than an
hour. If you are commuting from Peterborough you can be at your desk in London more
quickly than people travelling from commuter towns such as Tunbridge Wells, Crawley
or Guildford.
Peterborough is right beside the North-South A1(M) motorway and the East-West A47.
The A14 trunk route between the Midlands and East Coast ports is just a few miles
to the south. Travelling by car, the average journey time from Peterborough to the
UK's top twenty cities outside London is a whole hour less than the average from
central London.
You can reach major airports such as London Stansted, Luton and East Midlands in
just over an hour and get to Heathrow or Birmingham airports in less than two hours.
Travel to the East Coast ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Hull takes just over two
hours by road.
The historic university city of Cambridge is only 40 miles (64 km) away.
Easy to get around:
Peterborough has a network of dual carriageway ‘parkways’ – a system of ring roads
that makes it easy for you to get around without going through the city centre.
We are one of only four Environment Cities in the UK and are committed to providing
sustainable transport.
We are also one of just three Sustainable Travel Demonstration Towns carrying out
a five year programme – partly funded by government grants – to promote sustainable
means of travel such as walking, cycling, bus and the wise use of cars. For example,
the city’s Travel Choice
website will work out a fully personalised public transport journey plan for you
if you simply enter your starting point, destination and the date and time you wish
to travel.
The 50-mile (80 kilometre)
Peterborough Millennium Green Wheel network of cycleways, footpaths and
bridleways connecting the city and nearby villages is helping to encourage alternative
modes of transport.
