| CATHEDRAL SQUARE HOARDINGS CELEBRATE NEW CITY BRAND |
Peterborough’s new city brand will be celebrated with the completion of hoardings surrounding the Cathedral Square improvement works.
Clowns, a stilt walker and four-piece Caribbean steel band will be providing the entertainment from 10am to 4pm on Saturday (May 2).
As well as explaining the improvement works, the hoardings surrounding the construction area in Cathedral Square will be the first public display of Peterborough’s new brand identity which will be used to market the city and promote it as a desirable place in which to live, work and play.
Opportunity Peterborough chief executive Steve Compton said: “The new brand, The Future Is You, recognises everyone has the opportunity to be an ambassador for Peterborough and help promote our great city. Saturday’s event will celebrate a key investment in the city, much needed in this time of economic recession, helping to put Peterborough on the map and make it a destination for businesses and investors alike.”
Commissioned by Opportunity Peterborough, the striking city logo alongside The Future Is You strapline aims to capture the city’s spirit and create a sense of pride and energy in Peterborough. Its ambition is to help all individuals achieve their full potential and in doing so, live a better life, while supporting the creation of an economically sustainable environment in which businesses grow and flourish.
It is appropriate the new brand surrounds the construction work in Cathedral Square, a very visible sign of Peterborough’s regeneration. When complete, it is hoped the scheme to revitalise the heart of the city centre will encourage new businesses to open and bring new investment to the city, as well as supporting existing firms through increased numbers of visitors to the city centre.
Peterborough City Council’s cabinet member for housing, regeneration and economic development Councillor Graham Murphy said: “The hoardings present a powerful display of the new branding. The images fronting the Cathedral Square improvements emphasise to all city centre visitors that Peterborough has a positive future.”
On Saturday, branded balloons along the hoardings will draw attention to the information displayed, which includes the project’s zero waste commitment and archaeological finds as well as windows enabling shoppers and visitors to see exactly what is going on behind the screens.
Clowns will be handing out balloons and entertaining children with balloon modelling and face painting.

Notes to editors
The Cathedral Square improvement works to revitalise the heart of the city centre started in February 2009. The project includes demolishing the Corn Exchange and creating a new square, dubbed St John’s Square, as well as removing the planters, underground toilets and road surface in Cathedral Square and replacing them with fountains and seating areas.
Construction work in the Cathedral Square area should be complete by Christmas while work to create the new square will continue until Easter 2010. Shops surrounding the development will stay open throughout the construction.
Delivered by Opportunity Peterborough and Peterborough City Council, the £6million project is funded by the East of England Development Agency and Government’s Department for Communities and Local Government.
