| BUSINESS COMMUNITY WELCOMES STREETS, SQUARES AND SPACES TRANSFORMATIONS |
Plans for improvements to Cathedral Square have been welcomed by Peterborough’s Business Community.
Chairman of Peterborough Chamber of Commerce Iain Crighton said: “Creating a high-quality public realm in the city will bring massive and continuous economic benefits to the city. The designs will create a more vibrant heart for Peterborough, one which will be attractive to investors and one that the city’s citizens should be rightly proud of.”
The designs for Cathedral Square have been created by Peterborough-based LDA Design and were launched in October. They include the introduction of water features to the area in front of the Guildhall, seating inspired by the timber construction of the Cathedral roof and lighting effects to highlight key historic buildings.
More than 200 local people have provided their comments on the plans at feedback events held at the Museum and the Town Hall and more than 75 per cent of respondents said that they were pleased with the proposals.
Steve Bowyer, Opportunity Peterborough director of Strategic Growth, said: “This is a really exciting development for Peterborough and we are delighted with the feedback the designs have received. The works will last about 40 weeks and will be completed well before Christmas 2009 – creating a new environment for the city’s shoppers, visitors and everyone to enjoy.”
