Massive investment is going into Peterborough's education
facilities with new schools recently opened and building about to start on a new
university campus.
Education
Secondary education in Peterborough is being transformed with a £100 million investment
in new schools and facilities.
As part of this development programme, the new £46 million Thomas Deacon Academy designed by Foster & Partners
opened close to the city centre in September 2007 and will eventually cater for
2,200 pupils.
New £10.5 million sports facilities at
Jack Hunt School were officially opened in September 2007 and there is extension
and refurbishment work being undertaken at
Ken Stimpson Community School and The King’s School. Wind turbines, solar panels and geothermal
heating are to be used as part of a £12.9 million scheme to transform St John Fisher School.
A separate £68 million Private Finance Initiative has been used to build another
completely new secondary school –
The Voyager – in the north-west of the city which also opened in September
2007.
A new secondary
school in Hampton, Peterborough’s southern township, opened in September
2005.
All of the secondary schools in the city have sixth forms where a variety of courses
can be studied.
Further education in the form of A-Levels, degree courses and vocational qualifications
is available part and full-time at Peterborough Regional College which caters for around 15,000
students. Plans have recently been announced for a £75 million redevelopment of
the college.
Anglia Ruskin University recently unveiled plans to build
a £10 million higher education facility in the city – the start of a new university
campus – to provide more courses and improved facilities for degree-level students.
The university will also cater for post-degree students, working with local employers
to provide professional qualifications in a variety of subjects.
Independent primary and secondary schools in the area include Peterborough High School, Oundle School,
Laxton Junior School , Wisbech
Grammar School, and the Stamford Endowed Schools.
