£450 million North
Westgate development
to transform the heart
of Peterborough
We have exciting new ideas for Peterborough city centre and we are asking residents and the business community to help us develop a blueprint for the future.
Peterborough city centre

City centre developments, together with a new ‘Public Realm Strategy’ for improving public open space, will be knitted together by an integrated City Centre Area Action Plan.

The plan will look at the range of uses, facilities and attractions need to create a vibrant and sustainable city centre to serve an expanded Peterborough.

It will not only identify a coherent pattern for development but will also provide an implementation plan for the successful delivery of the city centre's regeneration.

It will focus on issues such as:

  • Increasing the offer in the city centre with more diversity in shopping, eating, leisure and cultural activity.
  • Changing the pattern of movement through the city centre, so that there is a natural pedestrian flow from the station, through Cathedral Square and on down to the river embankment (and vice versa).
  • Putting the cathedral back at the heart of the city.
  • Expanding the cultural, sporting and leisure activities available in the city centre – to make it a vibrant hub not just for business but also for sport, the arts and entertainment.
  • Facilitating a huge expansion of the residential population of the city centre, making it much more of a 24-hour location for activity.
  • Ensuring that all this new development is of a quality and character which protects the natural environment and enhances the existing historic setting of the city centre and the cathedral.

The Public Realm Strategy will help to create a Peterborough identity for our streets and squares. It will also prepare designs for some of our key streets at the city's heart to provide all of Peterborough's citizens with an environment of which they can be proud.

Work on both the public realm strategy and the city centre area action plan is already underway with public consultation a vital part of both projects.

We want to hear your views –

you’re part of our plan!

The result will be a city centre that is accessible both day and night. You will be able to shop, live, work and relax in a safe and vibrant urban centre that will be the equal of any modern European city.

Above all, the issue of sustainability is at the heart of our plans. The Peterborough of the future will be a city which is fit for the future.
